An Analysis on Labor Supply Behavior and Earnings Gap in Female: A Comparison of the Self-Employment and Paid-Employment Sectors

Abstract
In spite of the fact that the female workforce is one of the keys to future national competitiveness, women have been suffering from many different kinds of discrimination in recruitment, stratification, separation, and compensation in the labour market. This study is analysing the factors determining selecting self-employment or paid-employment and compares the self-employment and paid-employment sectors in terms of inter among female earnings differentials and their sources. Data used for this study are fifth waves of Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS). Analysis models include Probit model to women``s labor participation selection(employment or unemployment/ self-employment or paid-employment) and Quantile regression method to examine the effects of earnings gap. The results indicates that first, human capital such as educational attainment and age has positive effects on female``s selection of self-employment. Second, human capital, socio-demographic features, and labor market factors are significantly increased the earned income of the paid-employed. The analysis also revealed that the children of the self-employed could be significantly affected by other factors including family income, employees. With these results, the author suggests universal family and labor policies to support women¡¯s labor participation and the reconciliation of work and family.
